The resort experience varies enormously from $150/night guesthouses to $5,000/night private island overwater villas. This itinerary covers all three tiers.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
5 days · Honeymoon-optimised · All resort tiers
Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE); immigration takes 15–45 minutes
Resort transfer options: seaplane (20–60 min, incredible aerial views over atolls; premium) or speedboat (1–3 hrs depending on atoll; free with most resorts) or domestic flight + speedboat
Check in, orientation with dive/activity desk — book all experiences for Days 2–4 here
Evening: sunset cocktails at the overwater bar; dinner at the main restaurant
Seaplane tip: Seaplanes operate 6 AM–4:30 PM only (no night flying). If your flight arrives after 3 PM, you'll spend Night 1 at a transit hotel in Malé and seaplane the next morning. Most resorts handle this — confirm transfer logistics when booking.
Morning: guided house reef snorkeling — most premium resorts have a coral reef accessible directly from beach or overwater villa deck
Spot: reef sharks (harmless), sea turtles, manta rays, and hundreds of reef fish species
Afternoon: spa treatment — most Maldives resorts have overwater or garden spa pavilions; traditional Ayurvedic options available at India-aware properties
Sunset: kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding — complimentary at most resorts
Dinner: romantic overwater restaurant if available; private beach dining can be arranged (typically $100–200 additional)
Snorkeling vs diving: Non-divers can see 80% of Maldives marine life via snorkeling alone. PADI open water course is 3–4 days if you want to do deeper dives — worth doing for return visits.
Full-day excursion to South Ari Atoll — the world's most reliable whale shark zone (active year-round; peak Jan–May)
Snorkel alongside 8–12 metre whale sharks — harmless filter feeders, the world's largest fish
Most operators run 6–8 hour excursions from Malé or North Malé Atoll resorts (MYR 150–250/person from resort; chartered boat)
Evening: dolphin cruise — most resorts offer 1.5-hour sunset dolphin watching (spinner dolphins are very common)
Booking: Book whale shark excursions through your resort dive centre. Independent speedboat tours from Malé are cheaper (~$80) but the resort-coordinated ones have better guides. Note: touching whale sharks is prohibited by Maldivian law.
Daytime: visit a local inhabited island (Maafushi, Dhigurah, or similar) — see local Maldivian life, village mosques, fresh fish market
Sandbank picnic — resort boats arrange private sandbank stops; champagne or mocktails, photography, snorkeling
Night: bioluminescent beach experience (best at Vaadhoo Island or Rangali Island; check with resort if available nearby) — phytoplankton light up the shoreline cyan-blue as waves break
Night fishing excursion (traditional Maldivian handline fishing; most resorts offer this; catch is often cooked for breakfast next morning)
Bioluminescence: Best seen on new moon nights (no moonlight) from June–October in the Indian Ocean. Check lunar calendar before booking. Requires dark beach away from resort lights.
Morning: last snorkel at house reef or sunrise swim from overwater villa deck
Spa treatment if not done yet — many couples do couples massage on the final morning
Check out; seaplane or speedboat back to Velana Airport
Malé town stop if time allows — Friday Mosque, Fish Market, Maldivian street food
Evening or overnight flight back to India — most routes depart Malé at night
Duty free in Malé: Maldives is a dry Muslim country — no alcohol outside resort premises. The airport duty free is small; focus on local crafts (lacquerware, carved coconut products) rather than duty-free liquor.
