Jackson Heights, Queens — Mandatory Visit
Jackson Heights (74th Street, Roosevelt Avenue, Queens — E/F/M/R subway to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave) is the most culturally immersive Indian experience for Indian tourists outside India. Over 100 Indian restaurants, Indian sweet shops, sari and jewellery stores, Indian banks, paan wallahs, and temples within 4 blocks. Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Bengali are all spoken. One of the world's great ethnic neighbourhoods.
Adda Indian Canteen
Modern Indian · Long Island City
Critically acclaimed modern Indian restaurant. Mutton seekh, pork vindaloo, unusual regional Indian dishes rarely seen in the US. Strong vegetarian section. Reserve well ahead.
Junoon
Michelin Indian · Flatiron
Michelin-recognised upscale Indian. Business entertainment-appropriate. Tasting menu available. Strong vegetarian options. One of NYC's most prestigious Indian restaurants.
Jackson Diner
Indian Buffet · Jackson Heights
New York institution for Indian buffet lunch. Incredibly popular, incredibly cheap for NYC (lunch buffet $14–18). Mixed veg/non-veg. Best Indian-American buffet in the city.
Patel Brothers
Indian Grocery · Multiple
The largest Indian grocery chain in America. Jackson Heights and other NYC locations. Indian spices at India prices. Ready-to-eat Indian snacks — ideal for self-catering or homesick moments.
NYC Food Beyond Indian
Shake Shack (multiple): The American fast food experience worth having. Vegetarian ShackBurger available. Try a concrete shake (frozen custard) — uniquely NYC.
Halal Cart (Midtown): The "Halal Guys" 53rd & 6th Ave cart — lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce; $8 on street. One of NYC's most iconic food experiences. Completely vegetarian-unfriendly but the cultural experience is worth knowing.
Chelsea Market (Meatpacking): A 1-block indoor food hall in a former biscuit factory — from raw oysters to artisan cheese to tacos. Vegetarian options extensive.
Trader Joe's: The US grocery chain that has become a pilgrimage for Indian visitors — the Indian simmer sauces, cheap wines, and unique house-brand products are not available in India. Worth a 30-minute shopping trip.
Shopping Guide
Outlets · Department stores · Soho · Tax-free New Jersey
Woodbury Common Premium Outlets (1 hr from NYC): 250+ brand outlets at 25–65% off — Coach, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Saks OFF 5th, Nike, Under Armour, Calvin Klein. Shuttle from Port Authority Bus Terminal. Indian visitors consistently call this their best US shopping experience.
Fifth Avenue (Midtown): Saks Fifth Avenue department store, Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, and the Apple Store flagship. More for experiencing than bargain shopping.
Soho (Spring/Prince Streets): Independent boutiques, street art, and mid-range brands. Kate Spade, Madewell, Aesop, Glossier. Best for unique American brands.
Tax-free shopping in New Jersey: NJ has no sales tax on clothing. PATH train from 33rd St to Newport Mall takes 20 min. Significant savings on apparel vs Manhattan (NYC charges 4.5–8.875% sales tax).
What to buy: American Eagle, Levi's, Gap (all cheaper than India), American whiskey (Bourbon, Rye), quality vitamins and supplements (GNC, Costco), cosmetics (MAC, Urban Decay), American Snickers/M&M varieties, and NY-branded merchandise.
Nightlife & Entertainment
NYC never sleeps — and neither should you
Times Square at midnight: The neon peak is actually after midnight — fewer tourists, more energy. The Midnight Run on New Year's Eve is a bucket list experience (free, 2 million attendees).
Brooklyn bars (Williamsburg): NYC's most vibrant bar and live music scene. Beer halls, rooftop bars, indie music venues, and the East River waterfront with Manhattan skyline views. More relaxed than Manhattan.
Rooftop bars: 230 Fifth (Empire State views), 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge (skyline), The Standard High Line (Meatpacking views). Must arrive early on weekends — hour waits from 9 PM.
Indian events in NYC: Diwali on Lexington Avenue (usually October — city-sanctioned street festival; one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside India), India Day Parade (August, on Madison Avenue), and various Bollywood nights at club venues.
Desi NYC: New York has the largest Indian-American community in the US — professional, entrepreneurial, politically connected. The "Silicon Alley" tech scene and Midtown finance sector have large Indian presence. This means world-class Indian food, Indian grocery stores, temples (Ganesh Temple in Flushing is spectacular), and Indian cultural events year-round.
