Japan is India's fastest-growing outbound market — Google Trends shows 42% YoY growth in "Japan travel from India" searches. The country's cultural distinctiveness, safety, cleanliness, and anime/pop culture appeal are driving a new generation of Indian millennial travelers. Vegetarian food requires planning — Japan uses dashi (fish stock) in many apparently vegetarian dishes. Budget extra time for food research.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
7 days · Tokyo (4 nights) + Kyoto/Osaka (2 nights)
Arrive at Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND); Narita Express to Shinjuku (~90 min, ¥3,070); N'EX + IC card combo recommended
Check in Shinjuku area (most convenient base for first-time Tokyo visitors)
Evening: Shibuya Crossing — "The Scramble" is busiest at 7–8 PM; watch from Starbucks window or Mag's Park rooftop
Takeshita Street (Harajuku) for bizarre fashion, crepes, and Kawaii culture
Dinner: Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) — tiny alley of yakitori grills; ask for "yasai" (vegetable) options
IC Card: Buy a Suica or Pasmo card at Narita airport — works on all Tokyo trains, metro, buses, and convenience stores. Far simpler than buying individual tickets. Load ¥3,000–5,000 to start.
Early morning: Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa — Tokyo's oldest temple; arrive before 8 AM when it's empty and mystical; free entry
Nakamise Shopping Street — traditional souvenirs, ningyo-yaki cakes, fans, yukata; best for gifts home
Tokyo Skytree (nearby) — world's second-tallest tower; book timed entry online (¥3,100 to Tembo Deck)
Afternoon: Akihabara — electronics mega-stores, anime merchandise, gaming arcades (7-story arcades are a genuine spectacle)
Evening: Ueno Park area for dinner; many izakayas with vegetarian-friendly options near Ueno station
Senso-ji at dawn: The temple at 5–7 AM before tourists arrive is one of Japan's greatest experiences. The lanterns glow, incense fills the air, and Buddhist monks chant. This transforms from spiritual to Instagram-crowded by 10 AM.
Join a day tour or take Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone (90 min, ¥2,470); open-top sightseeing train
Hakone Open Air Museum — outdoor sculpture park with the spectacular Picasso Pavilion and Mt Fuji backdrop
Lake Ashi ropeway — cable car over volcanic valley with views of Mt Fuji (weather-dependent)
Cruise on Lake Ashi — pirate ship cruise; views of Mt Fuji across the lake
Owakudani — volcanic hot springs; try black eggs (boiled in sulphurous springs; said to extend life by 7 years)
Mt Fuji visibility: Fuji is visible only on clear days (mornings are clearest). October/November has the highest visibility rate. During cherry blossom (late March–April), Fuji views from Hakone are limited by weather. Check the day before via jnto.go.jp weather forecast.
Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea — JR Keiyo Line from Tokyo Station to Maihama (15 min)
DisneySea is the more unique park (no equivalent elsewhere in the world); Disneyland suits younger children
Book tickets online in advance (¥9,400 adult); Premier Access for popular rides
Indian food note: both parks have limited vegetarian options; bring snacks or eat a proper lunch before entering
Alternative to Disney: teamLab Planets in Toyosu — digital art immersive experience (¥3,200; book ahead)
DisneySea recommendation: Tokyo DisneySea is consistently rated the world's best theme park by travellers. The Arabian Coast section has design reminiscent of Middle Eastern/Indian aesthetics. Full day needed — arrive at rope drop (8:30 AM).
Morning: Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto (2h15m, ¥13,870 — covered by 7-day JR Pass at ¥50,000)
Afternoon: Arashiyama — bamboo grove (free, magical), Tenryu-ji Zen garden, Togetsukyo Bridge
Fushimi Inari — 10,000 red torii gates; free; hike begins immediately outside Inari Station
Gion district evening — geisha district; chance sightings of geiko and maiko after 6 PM near Hanamikoji Street
Stay overnight in Kyoto; or Nishiki Market for a temple-and-market packed evening
JR Pass worth it? For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka 7-day trip, the 7-day JR Pass (¥50,000) breaks even at 2 Shinkansen rides + regional trains. Calculate at hyperdia.com using your specific routes before buying.
Morning: Nara day trip (35 min from Kyoto by train) — Todai-ji temple (giant Buddha) + freely-roaming deer (800 of them); feed with shika senbei crackers (¥200)
Afternoon: Osaka by Shinkansen (15 min from Kyoto); Dotonbori area — neon signs, street food, the famous Glico Running Man sign
Universal Studios Japan — Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Attack on Titan, Nintendo World; book Express Pass in advance
Osaka food: takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes — vegetarian variants available), kushikatsu (skewered, battered, deep-fried)
Osaka Castle: If skipping USJ, Osaka Castle + the surrounding park is a half-day alternative — free grounds, ¥600 castle entrance. Better viewing from outside than inside. Combine with Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine (free) for a culture-focused Osaka day.
Return to Tokyo by Shinkansen morning
Tsukiji Outer Market — tuna belly sashimi (best in world), tamagoyaki (sweet egg omelet), fresh uni; arrives from 6 AM; outer market open daily
Ginza for luxury shopping — Uniqlo flagship, Itoya stationery (7 floors), duty-free cosmetics
Last purchase: Japanese Kit Kat (matcha, sake, wasabi flavours) and onigiri for the flight
Narita Express to NRT (buy e-ticket same day; no same-day JR Pass surcharge)
Duty-free in Japan: Japan's airport duty-free is excellent for whisky (Suntory, Nikka) and cosmetics. For electronics, Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera in Akihabara (tax-free with passport) beats airport prices on cameras and electronics.
Vegetarian Food in Japan — Survival Guide
Japan is challenging for strict vegetarians — here's the practical guide
The hidden fish problem: Dashi (fish stock) is the base of most Japanese soups and sauces. "No meat" dishes often still contain fish stock. Ask "dashi wa haitte imasu ka?" ("Does this contain dashi?") — restaurants will appreciate the specific question.
Safe options everywhere: Tempura vegetable (ask for no dashi dipping sauce), edamame, zaru soba with cold dip, miso soup from Miso Soup Bar chains, and 7-Eleven convenience store onigiri (look for kombu or pickled plum).
Vegetarian restaurant apps: HappyCow app lists verified vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Japan — Tokyo and Kyoto have 50+ options. Several temple restaurants (shojin ryori) serve Buddhist vegetarian kaiseki for ¥3,000–8,000.
Convenience store hack: 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart have microwave-hot vegetarian options, onigiri, and pre-packaged salads — reliable, affordable, and ubiquitous (more 7-Elevens in Japan than any country on Earth).
Budget Breakdown
Per person · 7 nights · Japan's weak yen makes it better value than 2 years ago
Flights (return)
₹45–90k
Via SIN, BKK, DXB, or DOH. AirAsia often cheapest via KUL.
Hotel (3–4 star, 7 nights)
¥70–140k
Budget capsule hotels to mid-range business hotels.
JR Pass + Transport
¥55–70k
7-day JR Pass + IC card for local metro.
Food & Activities
¥50–80k
Disneyland, USJ, temples, dining — Japan actually cheaper than London/NYC.
Total average per person: ~$2,000 (excluding shopping). Japan's JPY weakness in 2024–25 makes it excellent value — luxury items, electronics, and cosmetics are often 30–40% cheaper than in India's duty-free.
